On August 6th 2021 I was in Vernon BC when the entire town was put on evacuation alert from the White Rock Lake fire. The convection from the heat of that fire was throwing burnt bark, branches, and debris across the lake and onto peoples yards and driveways. I repeatedly refreshed local Facebook pages as people posted pictures of what had landed in their yards. The image of the hand holding the burnt debris seemed like this image of surrender, and acknowledgement of our tiny human attempts to control something bigger than us. Painted with ash from the Mount Christie and Grizzly Lake wildfires.
